How to voice type in WhatsApp Web (without sending voice notes)

Dictate your WhatsApp messages on your computer and send them as text. Step by step, with tips so they come out right the first time.

For: Anyone who uses WhatsApp on a computerPublished: 2026-09-28

Many people dislike receiving voice notes: they cannot always listen, they cannot search them and they have to wait. But typing a long message is tiring. The middle ground is dictation: you speak as if you were recording a voice note, and the other person gets clean text they can read in two seconds.

Why a dictated text beats a voice note

A one-minute voice note makes the other person stop what they are doing, grab headphones or find a quiet place. A text of the same length takes ten seconds to read and can be reread, copied or forwarded easily.

Texts are also searchable. If someone needs the address you sent or the time of an appointment three weeks later, they find it by typing one word in the chat search. With a voice note, they would have to replay messages one by one.

For you, dictating is just as comfortable as recording audio: you speak naturally without fighting the keyboard or autocorrect.

Step by step: dictate in WhatsApp Web with VoiceScribe

The most direct way is the VoiceScribe Chrome extension, which opens in a side panel next to WhatsApp Web. You do not switch tabs: you dictate on the side and paste into the chat.

If you prefer not to install anything, dictate on the VoiceScribe home page, copy the text with one button and paste it into WhatsApp. It works on any computer with Chrome, Edge or Safari.

  • Open WhatsApp Web in Chrome and sign in with your phone.
  • Open the VoiceScribe panel from the extension icon.
  • Choose the language you will speak (for example, English).
  • Tap the microphone and say your message calmly.
  • Review the text, copy it and paste it in the chat. Done.

Tips to get it right the first time

Speech recognition works better with full sentences than with single words. Think of the idea first and say it in one go, as if you were telling someone on the phone.

Speak at a normal distance from the microphone without shouting. If there is background noise (TV, people talking), move closer or find a quieter spot: the difference in quality is huge.

Unusual names and brands are sometimes misspelled. Just fix that word before copying. It is still much faster than typing everything.

  • Say full sentences, not word by word.
  • Pause briefly between ideas, not in the middle of a sentence.
  • Check names, phone numbers and addresses before sending.
  • If the message is very long, dictate it in two parts.

What to do with voice notes you receive

The opposite problem exists too: you get a three-minute voice note and cannot listen right now. You can download the voice note and upload it to VoiceScribe to turn it into text with AI.

This is especially useful for work audio with important details (addresses, prices, instructions), because the text stays in your history and you can search it later.

Privacy: what happens to what you dictate

When you dictate in the browser, the browser itself does the speech recognition (in Chrome, Google's service). VoiceScribe does not keep your voice: it only stores the text in your history if you have an account and choose to save it.

We never post anything on your behalf or read your chats. The extension only works with what you dictate in its panel.
