Voice to text for seniors: writing without a keyboard

How to help parents and grandparents write messages, emails and reminders by speaking, without learning to use a keyboard.

For: Older adults and their familiesPublished: 2026-09-28

For many older adults, the keyboard is the hardest part of technology: small letters, keys that are hard to find, autocorrect changing words. Speaking, on the other hand, is natural. Voice dictation lets them write messages and emails simply by saying what they want to say.

Why dictation is ideal for older adults

Speaking does not require good eyesight or steady hands. Someone with arthritis, tremor or vision problems can write a long message without touching the keyboard except to send it.

It also gives independence. Instead of asking a grandchild to type for them, they dictate their own message in their own words.

How to set it up on a computer in 5 minutes

VoiceScribe is designed so anyone can understand it: one big button that says "Tap and talk". No complicated menus or technical settings.

  • Open voicescribeia.com and bookmark it.
  • Tap “Tap and talk” and sign in with Google (one click, only the first time).
  • Choose their language in the "I will speak in" menu.
  • Allow the microphone the first time (the browser asks).
  • Show them the big button: tap, speak, tap to finish.
  • Then "Copy text" and paste it into the email or chat.

Tips for the first few times

At first, sit next to them. Ask them to say full sentences, as if speaking on the phone, and not to worry if a word comes out wrong: it can be fixed at the end.

If they speak softly, move the microphone closer or use a headset. Quality improves a lot.

  • Increase the browser text size (Ctrl and +).
  • Keep the page open in a pinned tab.
  • Write the three steps on paper: tap, speak, copy.

The most helpful everyday uses

Family messages on WhatsApp Web, emails to the doctor or bank, shopping lists, medication reminders and even recipes or memories they want to write down.

With a free account, everything they dictate is saved and they can see it again anytime.

Safety and privacy

VoiceScribe does not keep the voice, only the text if the person chooses to save it. We never ask for bank details and never send messages on the user's behalf. Still, remind them never to dictate passwords or card numbers.

Frequently asked questions
